Today’s post is late, thanks to the April issue of Outside magazine.
Years ago, Outside was an adventure magazine. Columnists such as Tim Cahill and Mark Jenkins wrote about personal experiences ranging from platypus hunting (Cahill) to losing a climbing buddy (Jenkins). Each issue took you to the far ends of the planet, places those of [...]

As I was looking over the registration for the Mountains-to-Sea Trail 12-Mile Challenge, I noticed this line wedged between “Camping Options” and “Be Aware”:
“Montrail will provide shoes for you to wear test!”
I’ve heard of getting a T-shirt, a water bottle or a hat at a race. But a loaner pair of shoes? Used shoes: Isn’t [...]

Twenty-seven people can fit into a trail shelter built for 12, sometimes you find Little Debbies tacked to a wall and they restore your faith in humanity, there are 165,000 blazes along the 2,178-mile Appalachian Trail .
The things you learn when you think you’re going to buy socks and you stumble onto a seminar.

If there’s anything approaching a guarantee in the world of greenway construction — a world in which delays are the norm — Raleigh’s chief greenway planner comes close to offering it.
“We’re operating on a 4-year schedule,” Vic Lebsock says of the city’s most ambitious one-shot greenway program yet, the 28-mile Neuse River Greenway. Construction on [...]

Making progress, slowly, on the GGNC greenway project. Between the nont-so-friendly-for-greenway-mapping weather and and my ineptitude with technology, well, it’s not a good combination for progress. I do have a prototype ready for your scrutiny, however.
My plan is to focus initially on longer greenways that connect with other longer greenways to make much longer greenways. [...]

Raleigh’s Dana Hughens likes to stay fit, isn’t crazy about gyms, likes to be outside, but admits to being a “bit of a wimp in cold weather.” She took up running, ran her first marathon — City of Oaks — in November. She’d like moving outdoors to be more of a family thing; Alas, her [...]

Kids in the Eastlake and Capitol Hill neighborhoods of Seattle didn’t have a lot of fun places to ride bikes. Then the folks from the Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance built the city’s first urban mountain bike skills park in the I-5 Colonnade Park. Kids in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan were in a similar [...]

There’s something no-nonsense about a piece of workout equipment that looks like it should be hanging in a medieval dungeon. It involves lots of stretching, a good deal of hanging as well. And your body will certainly feel the effects. Torture? Depends upon your perspective.
All that swam through my head as personal trainer Larisa Lotz [...]

A reminder that I’ll be tweeting live today from 6 BC, the second in the Triangle Off-Road Cyclists’ four-race, six-hour endurance mountain bike series. (Whew! Hope I’ve got more lungs for the race than I had for that sentence.) The race is a coming out of sorts for the new trail network at Briar Chapel, [...]

Does it help to have friends in high places? If there’s any truth to the old political adage then expect to see rapid development of the East Coast Greenway through the region, now that homegrown Dennis Markatos-Soriano is executive director of the East Coast Greenway Alliance. The alliance was founded in 1991 with the goal [...]
